Composite (White) Fillings

When you look in the mirror to brush your teeth can you see your fillings? Would you prefer not to?

Most people have fillings of one sort or another and they are most likely to be made of amalgam. These are grey or silver in colour (and contain Mercury). These are used to restore a tooth after part of it has been lost due to decay or accidental damage.

Today, because we are much more conscious of our smile, we can choose a natural looking alternative – the composite or tooth-coloured filling. More and more people are choosing this sort of filling because of the great aesthetic results

What’s involved?

The process is very similar to having an amalgam (silver coloured) filling. You will have the area numbed with local anaesthetic before the tooth is prepared. This could involve removing decay or old fillings and sometimes weakened parts of the tooth are removed.

A filling material is then put into the tooth and a curing light (a small hand-held light) used to set the filling. It is then finished by trimming and polishing so that it fits with your bite and feel and works like a whole natural tooth.

Should I wait until I need a filling replaced to change from an amalgam to a white filling?

There are no reasons why you should. However we can advise you on how and when to do this. We want to ensure that your dental health comes first but will work with you to achieve the best smile for you.

Remember – white fillings and tooth whitening – think ahead!

The shade of your tooth coloured filling is matched to your current tooth shade. So if you having a tooth coloured filling be sure to have the tooth whitening first so that the filling can be matched to your new shade.

These fillings are considered to be a cosmetic treatment and not available on the NHS, so they must be paid for. But they may not be as costly as you think.
